October 2004 Update
Kelly's October Update-11 October 2004
When I started working on this newsletter three days ago I was wearing my
birkenstocks and wishing I had chosen something cooler than a three quarter
sleeve shirt to school. Today, I'm wearing a long sleeved shirt and a
sweater, and seriously considering a jacket. Things change that quickly
around here, evidently!
The weather isn't the only sudden change in my life right now. I started
classes at the Universidad Complutense Madrid a week ago, and suddenly, I'm
having to get used to earlier mornings, lectures, taking notes, homework,
etc. all over again. Only this time, it's all in Spanish! I already feel
like my Spanish is improving greatly, though, and I'm learning so much! I
had almost forgotten that as much as I complained about school, I really
loved it! For me, I think the best thing about being a student at the
Complutense is that it opens doors to make friends that are impossible to
create outside of being "one of them." For one thing, the fact that I am in
class every day, taking the bus to my neighborhood, walking on the main
streets of campus, eating in the cafeteria (when I dare), etc. means that I
have a natural way of meeting people. I have met more students in the past
week than the past several months combined, without really trying! I'm
praying now that God will develop friendships with some of these students
that will draw them closer to HIM. The program I am in puts me in class
with the same students for an entire year, so I'm excited to see what God
does with that. I'm so thankful for this opportunity!
24-7
Another cool thing that's going on this month is that Mountainview, along
with a couple other ministries in Madrid, is hosting a 24-7 prayer room the
week of 18-24 October. A 24-7 prayer room is, basically, a room that is
dedicated to prayer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Besides a place to go
talk to God, there are lots of art supplies, music, paper on the walls,
places to sit and be quiet, etc., so an individual or a group can express
themselves to God in their own way. (check out www.24-7.com for more info
on this cool ministry!) Stuff is kind of busy this week with preparations,
but we're excited to see what happens with it.
Speaking of prayer.
A group of people who have a heart for university students in Madrid came
together to pray for the first time last Wednesday. It was an awesome time!
We're planning to meet monthly to pray for university campuses, actually
prayer walking on a different campus each month. It was one of the most
encouraging things that has happened here in months!
Community Group
The Monday and Wednesday night groups both outgrew their homes this
month-from those groups we have formed 2 new groups-thank God for providing
leaders for those groups and for the new people that He has brought to
Mountainview!
Merry Christmas Kelly!
I just got my plane tickets home for Christmas last week-I'm really excited
to get to see my family! Hopefully I'll get to see some of you that are in
the states while I'm home.
Here are some things you can pray about this month:
Monday-Praise God for the opportunity for me to study here! Ask God to
bring along relationships with students that will draw people to HIM.
Tuesday-Ask God to bless Mountainview International Church, especially the
24-7 prayer room and a trip to a Moroccan orphanage that a group from the
church is taking at the end of the month.
Wednesday-Pray for my family today-My two older sisters are both pregnant
right now-Susie and Kim-praise God for new life!!!
Thursday-Pray that my only goal and focus will be pursuing Jesus this month
Friday-Pray for the community groups in the city, that we will continue to
grow Spiritually and in size, and that God will continue to provide leaders
for new groups that will form from existing groups.
Saturday-Ask God to continue to provide for my finances
Sunday-Pray that I adjust well to my new schedule and balance school, work,
and rest well.
Thanks so much for your prayers and your encouragement and support. I
praise God for you!
Peace,
Kelly
